The FURNEEMORE 2050 project, directed at the EU’s furniture manufacturing sector, addresses a critical gap in the decarbonisation of the less energy- and carbon-intensive in the EU’s manufacturing sector: an industry largely composed of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with an electricity demand which is largely dominated by production equipment, supplied by intermediaries (machinery suppliers or Original Equipment Manufacturers, OEMs). Electric motor systems are at the heart of most industrial operations, accounting for nearly 70% of electricity consumption in manufacturing . In the furniture sector, more than 55% of the final energy demand is releated to electricity uses: notably motor-driven systems are used extensively across core processes such as dust extraction, air compression, conveying, HVAC, and machining. Despite their central role, these systems are often outdated, oversized, or operated inefficiently due to lack of monitoring, knowledge, or access to standardised solutions. This configuration, exemplified in FURNEEMORE 2050 for the furniture sector, is largely prevalent for most of the less energy-intensive manufacturing industries in Europe. We estimate the replication potential for other sectors of the manufacturing industry with similar characteristics as the furniture industry at 48% of all electricity uses in manufacturing industry. The project will prepare to replicate the concept worked out for the furniture industry to manufacturing sectors with similar characteristics.
