Packaging of the Future: When Cardboard Becomes Smart

ISR-UC are contributing to the "Embalagem do Futuro" (Packaging of the Future) Agenda, a project integrated into Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan. Within the scope of subproject PPS10 – focused on new cardboard packages with unique properties for food contact and e-commerce – ISR-UC has developed three complementary technological lines that transform conventional packaging into an active interface between the physical product and the digital world.
1. Secure hybrid coding
2. NFC-based sensorization
3. Sustainable printed electronics
The work combines miniaturization, energy autonomy, robustness, cost-effectiveness, and circular economy principles, positioning Portugal at the forefront of smart, sustainable packaging innovation.
